Is scuba diving for children?

Convincing children to participate in sports can sometimes be difficult. In the age of game consoles and advanced computers for home use, riding a bicycle or playing ball may seem common. What’s different when it comes to diving! Going into deep water, penetrating shipwrecks, admiring sea creatures and overcoming your own fears and weaknesses can be really appealing! That’s why we recommend scuba diving for kids as a way to move, explore the world and get away from glowing screens.

Advantages of diving

If your child wants to go scuba diving, it means they will actively spend their free time. He can also experience amazing adventures underwater, whether in the pool or on an exotic vacation. A child in scuba diving classes, especially scuba diving, will learn how to operate diving equipment and feel a sense of responsibility for themselves and other divers around them. This is a significant step to teamwork and partnership. By the way, he will also gulp down some knowledge of physics and biology, but he will also learn about himself, his weaknesses and strengths.

What does learning to dive look like?

Before a child can even go underwater, he or she must complete a professionally prepared course, which consists of two parts, theoretical and practical. The practical part includes lectures in an accessible format on the construction of equipment, basic physics, medical knowledge, concepts relevant during first aid. After the theoretical classes only comes time for diving lessons in the pool, where the water is perfectly clear and pleasantly warm. However, elements of the theory are constantly assimilated and reminded, and the child learns primarily through play. And most importantly – if it does not feel up to the task, it is never forced to go underwater.

As young as eight can take scuba diving classes

Every parent knows their child best. Some toddlers as young as a few years old are so curious about the world that nothing will stop them from seeking new experiences. Therefore, if an eight- or ten-year-old wants to dive, nothing stands in the way. For many children, scuba diving is a lot of fun, but also an opportunity to show off their unique skills and out-of-the-box hobbies to their peers. However, restrictions on going underwater were set in advance. Children between the ages of 8 and 15 can, with scuba diving equipment, descend to a depth of 12 meters, while those aged 15+ can go to a maximum depth of 20 meters. At the same time, no one specifies what age is ideal to start a diving course. It is the child, together with the parents, who must feel that the pool activities will be a lot of fun and not cause anxiety.

Is diving a big investment?

Parents do not need to invest significant resources to get their toddler started diving. To start the course, you don’t need to have your own equipment, as the use of a mask, underwater breathing equipment and fins is included in the price of the instructor’s classes. More important is that the child feels comfortable in the water and that he or she can swim independently. It is recommended that the student be able to swim 200 meters of the pool, but style and time are irrelevant. However, the instructor needs to see how the prospective dive course participant behaves and feels in the water. Fear of water, of being submerged, of getting wet in the face, claustrophobia and very poor fitness are all factors that can be a barrier to starting the course.

Diving is a safe sport for children

We are, of course, talking about recreational diving in a controlled environment, under the guidance of an instructor. However, over time, once a child has gone underwater a few or a dozen times, he or she will be able to dive even in open water and descend to considerable depths. Many children also come to the course with their parents. Participating in activities together binds the family together, helps strengthen ties and fosters a fascination for the sport. So you may find that your next family vacation will be scuba diving in the waters of Egypt, Zanzibar or Greek bays. Such an alternative to lazy beach vacations can prove salutary for family relationships. However, it is always worthwhile to consider all participants in a dive, to be on guard and supportive in more difficult moments. Completion of a professional course is the basis for successful underwater descents, whether the student is 10 or 90 years old.
